Stump Grinding in Poole, Cleared Out Below Ground Level

Poole Tree Surgeons arranges stump grinding across Poole and the surrounding towns, carried out by NPTC-qualified, fully insured tree surgery teams.

Once a tree is down, the stump is the part that is left behind. It is a trip hazard, it spoils a lawn or patio, and it can sprout or attract fungus. Stump grinding removes it, ready for turf, planting or paving.

A stump grinder chips the stump and its upper roots into mulch, normally to a few hundred millimetres below ground. It is quicker, cleaner and less disruptive than digging a stump out by hand, and it leaves the surrounding ground mostly undisturbed. Poole's sandy ground makes grinding quick and clean, and the chippings can be left as mulch or taken away.

What to Expect

We clear the area, grind the stump down to an agreed depth and either leave the chippings to fill the hole or take them away and backfill. If you plan to replant in the same spot, we recommend taking the chippings away and replacing them with fresh soil.

Compact grinders fit through most side gates, so you do not need much space. If the stump is in a tight garden or close to a wall or drain, we will tell you how we will protect it.

Stump Grinding: Common Questions

How deep do you grind?

Typically 200 to 300 mm below ground level, and deeper if you plan to plant a new tree or build on the spot.

Do I have to grind a stump?

No, but stumps can sprout, rot and harbour fungus and pests. Most people grind them for a cleaner finish.

What happens to the chippings?

They can be left to fill the hole and make a mulch, or we can remove them and bring in topsoil.
